Due to the nature of this experience, star gazing is a unique and limited lodge activity, carefully offered only when conditions allow. Clear skies, minimal moonlight, and a suitable programme all play a role in whether the experience can take place. For this reason, we highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment, while understanding that nature ultimately determines when the stars will fully reveal themselves.

An Intimate and Personal Experience
When conditions are just right, our guides will lead you to a carefully selected viewing location on the reserve — far removed from artificial light and immersed in the stillness of the African night. For smaller groups, this becomes an especially personal and immersive experience.

Our guides will set up the Celestron NexStar 4SE telescope, carefully aligning it to focus on specific celestial highlights. Because the telescope must be calibrated for each individual viewing point, smaller groups are ideal, allowing each guest the opportunity to fully appreciate what is being observed. Larger groups may require the telescope to be repositioned multiple times, as the night sky is constantly shifting — part of what makes this experience both delicate and extraordinary.

In addition to telescope viewing, our guides may also make use of a star gazing app, offering an interactive way to explore constellations, identify stars, and deepen your understanding of the night sky in real time. This blend of traditional observation and modern technology creates a richer, more engaging experience for guests of all levels of interest.
What You May See in the Summer Skies
During the warmer summer months, the skies above Monate come alive with some of the most striking celestial features visible from the Southern Hemisphere. The Milky Way stretches boldly across the sky, often appearing brighter and more detailed due to the low levels of light pollution in the bushveld.

You may also encounter well-known constellations such as Scorpius, easily recognised by its curved tail, and Sagittarius, which points toward the dense and fascinating centre of our galaxy. These regions are particularly rich in star clusters and nebulae, offering breathtaking views through the telescope.

On exceptionally clear evenings, bright planets such as Saturn or Jupiter may also be visible, revealing their defining features — from Saturn’s rings to Jupiter’s glowing bands — depending on their position in the sky at the time.
Winter Nights: Crisp, Clear, and Infinite
Winter in the bushveld offers some of the clearest and most stable viewing conditions of the year. The cooler air reduces atmospheric distortion, allowing for sharper, more defined views of distant objects.

During this time, iconic constellations such as Orion dominate the night sky, with its distinctive belt of three stars easily visible to the naked eye. Nearby, the bright star Sirius — the brightest star visible from Earth — shines brilliantly, often drawing attention even before the telescope is introduced.
