Wildlife at Monate Conservation Lodge
Our 1839 hectare private reserve is located in a malaria-free area. It is extremely diverse with wide open plains, typical bushveld areas and fascinating rocky outcrops, caves and koppies.
The Monate Lodge reserve is home to 3 of the Big Five, namely Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard as well as cheetahs, giraffe, hippopotamus, zebra, jackal, crocodile, warthog and a large variety of antelope and 46% of the bird species in South Africa – being close to Nylsvley Nature Conservancy, bird sightings are prolific.
Our professional and enthusiastic Rangers keep guests intrigued during early morning and late afternoon game drives, exploring the various habits and their many inhabitants.
Monate Cheetah Re-wilding Program
Monate Lodge runs a cheetah re-wilding program in conjunction with The Endangered Wildlife Trust. Our aim is to re-wild young and orphaned cheetahs so as to reintroduce them back into the wild. We track them on a daily basis to monitor their well being and hunting skills to ensure they are able to provide for themselves.
This is an exceptionally necessary program as cheetahs are considered endangered and there are said to be less than 1,000 cheetahs in South Africa. We have worked with more than 20 cheetahs since the project started in 2003 and we welcome a future filled with many more of these majestic creatures!
Guests can enjoy seeing our cheetahs on game drives, whether they are in our boma (after relocation to Monate’s game reserve) or roaming free on our reserve.
Actively involved in Rhino Anti-poaching Projects
Our Game Lodge is actively involved in fighting to protect black and white rhinos who are also endangered species. Since 2009 we have had an anti-poaching team who track and follow our rhinos 24/7 to ensure that they are safe and that their horns remain untouched.
We believe that creating awareness and educating our guests regarding rhino poaching is bringing us one step closer to saving them from extinction. Help us, help them!
