Wildlife Activities

Our experienced rangers will guide your enthusiasm towards our diverse ecology during the length of your stay

The pulse of Africa will drive your ancient instincts to flush out the buzz of the city while your soul connects once more with your ancestral claim to your rightful place in the wild.

Our 1839 hectare private reserve is located in a malaria-free area. It is extremely diverse with wide open plains, typical bushveld areas and fascinating rocky outcrops, caves and koppies.

Home to buffalo, lion, giraffe, hippopotamus, zebra, a large variety of antelope, and close to 50% of the bird species found in South Africa.

Our professional and enthusiastic rangers keep guests intrigued during early morning and late afternoon game drives, exploring the various habitats and their many inhabitants.

Monate Lodge game driveTwo opportunities are offered daily for guided game drives with our experienced rangers, one early mornings and one in the afternoons.

Start your day bright and early with a morning game drive, while the coolness of the night still lingers. Enjoy a warm cup of coffee from one of our unique vantage points and soak in the freshness of the new day. Keen birdwatchers especially enjoy the bushveld mornings. While we track down the vast range of wildlife found on Monate Game Reserve, you’re sure to spot some of the diverse populations of birds that occur on our reserve.

Every evening closes down with a relaxing sundowner somewhere on our beautiful reserve. The evenings are best known for game viewing as most of the animals start making their way to a water source to quench their thirst after a warm African day. The animal activity during this time of day, increases your chances of spotting animals interacting with each other.

Monate Lodge bush walk For the more active and brave guests, we offer the opportunity to swap your game drive for a game walk with one of our rangers.

They will take you into the bush with the vehicles, and then explore the area on foot, pointing out fauna, insects and other interesting finds you often miss from the back of the vehicle. You might even cross paths with some of the bigger game such as antelope, giraffes or zebra, but your guide will always ensure your safety as well as that of the animal.

We strive to bring our visitors closer to nature, as nature intended. We look forward to sharing our wonderful piece of heaven with you.

Secretary Bird ProjectBirder friendly establishment and Ubelele Secretary Bird Project

For the bird lovers we offer prolific bird sightings, with Nylsvley Nature Conservancy (a world heritage site for birding) a mere 10km away, hosting 46% of the bird species in South Africa. Monate Game Lodge is also proudly recognised as a Birder Friendly Establishment by BirdLife South Africa.

Furthermore, we are involved in the Ububele Secretary Bird Project. The project is undertaken by the Endangered Wildlife Trust Birds of Prey Programme, using trackers on baby Secretary Birds to collect valuable information about their breeding patterns, food selection, etc.

The Secretary Bird is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature) as "vulnerable" because of a drastic decline in their numbers due to habitat disturbances, hunting and illegal trade with the bird. At Monate Game Lodge we have one Secretary Bird collared with a GPS since December 2014, forming part of this tracking process and data collection programme. Visit our blog (hyperlink) for feedback on this project.

Monate breeding program Breeding Our Legacy - Game breeding to conserve our animals

With the change of ownership of Monate Game Lodge, a segment of the reserve became part of a game breeding project on the neighbouring farm. The goal of the project is to preserve our heritage by investing in species that run the risk of extinction.

Please visit www.thithombo.co.za should you be interested in learning more about the project.
